Price Discount Calculator
5-Star Rating System
The term discount can be used for many forms of reduction in the price of a good or service. The two most common types of discounts are discounts in which you get a percentage off, or a set amount off.
A percentage off the price usually means some percentage,
say 10%, off the original price of the product or service. For example, if a
good costs $45, with a 10% discount, the final price would be calculated by
subtracting 10% of $45 from $45, or equivalently, 90% of $45:
10% of
$45 = 0.10 × 45 = $4.50
$45 –
$4.50 = $40.50
or
90% of
$45 = 0.90 × 45 = $40.50
In
this example, you're saving 10%, or $4.50.
A fixed amount of value refers to subtracting any fixed
amount from the original price. For example, given that a service normally
costs $95, and you have a discount coupon for $20 off, this would mean
subtracting $20 from $95 to get the final price:
$95 -
$20 = $75
In
this example, you are saving a fixed amount of $20.
The above examples are two of the most common discounting methods. Many others can be more confusing, such as stackable discounts where you can get 20% off the original price, then 15% more than that discounted price. If you need to do these calculations, refer to the Percentage of Calculator.
What
is the Discount Percentage Formula
The Simple Formula you also use in your own calculators. The
formula for discount is exactly the same as the percentage decrease formula:
discounted price = original price - (original price × discount / 100)
The discount is the list price minus the sale price then
divided by the list price and multiplied by 100 to get a percentage.
D= (L−S) ×100
L
MEANS:
- L = List Price
- S = Sale Price
- D = Discount Percentage
Example
If the list price of an item is $120 and the final sale
price is $90 then the discount is calculated as follows:
D= (L−S) ×100
L
D= (120−90) ×100
120
D= 30 ×100
120
D=0.25×100
D=25%
Amount Saved=$120−$90=$30
How
to Calculate Amount Discount and Sale Price?
Calculating the discount and sale price involves a simple
formula. Here are the steps:
1.
Determine the Discount Percentage:
·
The discount is usually represented as a
percentage of the original price.
·
For example, if the discount is 20%, you would
represent it as 0.20 in decimal form.
2.
Calculate the Discount Amount:
·
Multiply the original price by the discount
percentage.
·
Discount Amount = Original Price × Discount
Percentage
3.
Calculate the Sale Price:
·
Subtract the discount amount from the original
price to get the sale price.
·
Sale Price = Original Price - Discount Amount
Let's Look at an Example:
Example: Suppose you have an item with
an original price of $100 and a discount of 20%.
1.
Determine the Discount Percentage:
·
Discount Percentage = 20% = 0.20 (in decimal
form)
2.
Calculate the Discount Amount:
·
Discount Amount = $100 × 0.20 = $20
3.
Calculate the Sale Price:
·
Sale Price = $100 - $20 = $80
So, the sale price of the item with a 20% discount would be $80.
